JIM PASTORE, Director
B.A., University of Notre Dame; M.A. in Educational Leadership, College of New Jersey. Certifications in Secondary English as well Principal. Jim has taught at the Colombus School in Medellin, Colombia; Costa Rica Academy in San Jose, Costa Rica; the American School of Tegucigalpa, Honduras; and the International School in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Jim’s previous administrative posts include Assistant to the Deputy Superintendent of the school district of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Assistant Principal at McCaskey High School in Lancaster, PA. From Lancaster he went on to be the Middle School Principal at Marymount International School in Rome, Italy, followed by 5 years as Director of the International School of Trieste, Italy.

DR. DION NITTIS, College Counselling/Creative Writing
B.A..,University of Michigan; M.A., Ph.D. from UCLA. International Educator for over 35 years at universities and schools in Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Czech Republic, Greece, Malaysia and Japan. He has worked with U.S.AID and ran the Egyptian Fulbright Scholar Exchange Program, and also served as Director of the Lycée International in Paris. A longtime friend of the Caribbean area, he has lived and worked in Costa Rica and Venezuela, and was appointed Teaching Fellow with the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy to the University of Haiti.

JANE JACK, Head of Administration/Bursar
Graduated from Seneca College in Toronto, Ontario, in Fashion Design, and in 1993 completed her 5-year course in Certified Management Accountants. For several years she was the Financial Controller of a Public Auto Auction in Canada. Besides working at Island Academy since moving to Antigua, Jane spends much of her free time volunteering on the island, in particular as a certified rescue diver.


CINDY ROBINSON, Education Officer
Cambridge / Oxford Teaching Diploma. Credit in Early Childhood Education (Ministry of Education Antigua & Barbuda); Servol (RTRC) First Class Honors in:- Administration, Special Education, Child Development, Teacher Training and First Aid. Cindy has been teaching for over 17 years and has lived and worked in the United States, Trinidad and Antigua. She has been working at IA for 6 years. She enjoys working with children and young teens making positive impact in their lives.


DENISE MATTHEW, Student Services/School Secretary
Jamaican by birth, Ms. Matthew has studied Principles of Business and Business Studies and has over 7 years experience in administration. Ms. Matthew is an active member of the Antigua and Barbuda HIV and AIDS network (ABHAN), where she spends her time counseling, educating and assisting persons affected by HIV and AIDS.

Primary School Teachers

LUCY OWENS, Kindergarten Teacher
B.A. (Hons) in English & Education with Qualified Teacher Status, University College, Chichester, UK. PYP Level 1. Has 11 years experience teaching in the UK and 2 years teaching at Island Academy. For three yearsshe held a senior management post in a large Infant School.


ARNOLYN GOODWIN, Kindergarten Teacher
Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Upper Class Honours). She has been teaching for the past twelve years here in Antigua in Pre-K to Grade 1 levels.

KATHERINE HUTCHINSON, Grade 1 Teacher
Three Year Early Childhood Education Diploma, Humber College, Ontario, Canada. IBO Administrative Co-Ordinator's Level 1 and PYP Level 1. Applied Behaviour Analysis Trainers (CARD) Certificate.



SARAH HEIBERG, Grade 2 Teacher

B.A. Honours in French and English, University of British Columbia; M.A. in French Language and Literature, McGill University; B.Ed., Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. Now in her second year at I.A., she previously taught at the Pan American School in Costa Rica. Sarah also served as an examiner for the British Columbia Ministry of Education for the French Provincial Grade 12 level exams and as a translator for the Liu Institute for Global Issues at
the University of British Columbia on a report published internationally on the Rwandan genocide.

 

TANYA MENDOZA, Grade 3 Teacher
B.A. in Elementary Education, Florida International University; ESOL Certified. She has fifteen years of experience teaching in the United States and two years in Antigua.

 


CHRIS NORTON, Grade 4 Teacher
B.A. (Hons) in Sociology, University of Leeds. Before joining Island Academy, he taught a number of years at CCSET International Academy, Antigua.

GIAN CRISCITIELLO,Grade 5 Teacher
B.A. in Anthropology, University of New Hampshire: M.S. in Education, Wheelock College: Teacher in primary grades for 13 years in Massachusetts; Principal for primary school for five years in Massachusetts. Participant in National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association's Teacher at Sea Program involved in studying whale populations off the coast of Nova Scotia.

 

NATALIE LEWIS, Grade 6 and 7 teacher - Math and Science
Natalie received her B.A. in International Relations / Development & Int’l Political Economy from Brown University. Besides having taught Gifted Science at the Middle Years level for several years, she was Assistant Director, International Education & Multicultural Affairs at Bryant University, and State Coordinator and teacher, Project SEE (Alabama School of Mathematics & Science).
KANIKA SIMPSON-DAVIS, Grade 6 and 7 teacher - English and Social Studies
She holds her B.A. in English (Hons) from Birmingham University, and Post-Graduate degree in Law and Education from Cardinal Newman University, U.K. Kanika has over two decades of Primary school teaching experience, plus five years as a Principal. She also served as Higher Education Program Coordinator at Ithaca College, New York.

WENDY FERRIS - Primary Spanish Teacher
Studied at the Florida State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Management and Multinational Business with her focus area being Latin America. She also has a Minor in Spanish and studied abroad in Spain during the summer of 2007. Ms. Ferris has three years in journalism as a subeditor at the Antigua Sun Newspaper along with a year of teaching in Antigua.

PATRICIA CUNNINGHAM, Primary Art Teacher
Primary Art: BA (Hons) Textiles/Fashion, Manchester Metro University, UK. Post Graduate Certificate in Education: Art and Design, Manchester Metro University, UK. Thirteen years Art & Craft and Design teaching experience in both Secondary and Primary schools in The Bahamas, Montserrat, and Antigua. Classroom support and tutoring in early literacy for students experiencing difficulties. Co-owner of Sea Wolf Diving School, Antigua. Previously part of the team at Bloomsbury to publish Harry Potter.

GILLY HUNTINGTON-RAINEY, Primary Music/Secondary Choir
Diplome D’Aliance Française, Université de Nancy. Five years as Music teacher at Island Academy. Two years prior to that as Island Academy Administrator. Deputy Director of Expression Singers since it's inception 20 years ago. Before Mrs G came to Antigua in 1984, she worked in the film industry and as a chef on super yachts.

Upper School Teachers

DEMI PETROU, English Teacher
B.A. in Media and Cultural Studies with Journalism and Communication Studies, Middlesex University. PGCE in English, University of Hertfordshire. IB Diploma in English. Demi has four years of teaching experience that includes IB Literature as well as ESL for Special Needs students.

DR. JORGE MENDOZA, Science Teacher
Dual B.A. in Biology/ Chemistry with minor in Mathematics, St. Thomas University, Miami Shores, Florida. Has five years of teaching in the United States and Antigua. Post-Secondary experience 5 years Fulltime faculty Keiser University. Member of advisory board Keiser University 2005-2007. Program Coordinator for Health Service Administration and Medical Assisting programs, Corinthian Colleges Inc.

JAVIER COVO GRANDES, Spanish Teacher
B.A. in archaeology, Universidad de Salamanca (Spain); M.A. In Spanish As a Second Language , Universidad de Murcia (Spain). Two years teaching Spanish at Stone Bridge High School, Virginia, United States. Five years working as an archaeologist in different settlements of Italy, Spain, Greece, and Costa Rica.

 

KAROL LYN EDWARDS, Science Teacher
B.Sc. Biology major, Chemistry minor, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland; B. Ed. Biology, Chemistry, Junior High School Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland; M. Ed. Teaching Science to Exceptional Students, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. Now in her 22nd year of international school teaching and administration.

CAROL ANN GOULDSTONE, Art Teacher
Diploma in Art and Design, Cardiff Art College; City and Guilds qualification in Creative Textiles, Windsor and Eton College, U.K. More than forty years of experience in various fields of the Arts, graphic design, fashion design, gallery director, as well as teaching at all levels, primary, secondary and tertiary. Carol has been teaching Visual Arts at IA since 2001.

CHRISTINE IRVING, Maths Teacher
Honours Bachelors of Kinesiology, McMaster University, Canada; Honours Bachelors of Education, Queens University, Canada. She has taught mathematics, as well as health and physical education in the both Ontario and Nevada. Currently in her third year of teaching at Island Academy.

 

JAY RANDALL, History and Social Sciences Teacher
B.A. in History from University of King's College at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia; BEd from OISE at University of Toronto, Toronto; IB Level 1 - HL History, History of the Americas; IB - Internal Assessment. Now in his third year teaching at Island Academy, he previously worked for the UNHCR in Angola with Right to Play. Jay also has four years experience running outdoor and leadership programs in Canada. Varsity rugby player and coach.

DORLAN JAMES, IT Teacher
Attended Hatfield Polytechnic, Hertfordshire, and Paddington Technical College, Lutton, U.K. He spent seven years in England at Brent Information Technology as a Training Supervisor / Director. In Antigua has worked 6 years teaching Information Technology and 14 years as a computer consultant and technician.

MARK MITCHELL, Physical Education Teacher, Primary and Secondary
Received his university degree in Physical Education / Movement Studies (Honours) from Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Prior to coming to Island Academy Mark taught at the Caribbean Center for Sports and Education Training (CCSET) here in Antigua.
