MUSIC AT ISLAND ACADEMY
Island Academy has a dynamic Music programme that seeks
to instill a love of music and singing that our students will carry with
them throughout their lives, along with an ability and desire to perform
which will enhance self-esteem and confidence. Students sing and perform
every year and we incorporate into our programme songs from many different
traditions and cultures throughout the world. High on the list of priorities
are songs that reflect the ideals of peace, love, tolerance, caring for
the environment and multiculturalism.
Primary students are taught different musical concepts through song and
games, and the curriculum covers the concepts of beat and rhythm, pitch,
melody, harmony, texture, form, timbre, expression, dynamics and tempo
– as well as listening, composition and historical context. Primary
students are introduced to tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments,
and from Grade 4 to 6 they learn the recorder. This school year has seen
the introduction of World Music Drumming for Grades 7 & 8, although
drumming is taught across the elementary grades. We currently have a Junior
and Senior Choir as well as our Chamber Choir (a select chorus) of which
we are justly proud. In addition, with the move to our new campus, we
are very excited to now have a Secondary School Choir.
