ADMISSIONS

All enquiries should be directed to the Head of Administration, either by emailing admin@islandacademy.com or by calling (268) 562 6200.

An informal visit to the school may also be arranged. Before a student may be considered for admission, the school must be provided with the following:

STEP 1

• A completed Application Form (attached here)
• If applying for the Secondary school or IB Diploma five (5) teacher recommendation forms (attached here)
• A non-refundable admissions fee of $150.00 EC. This fee ensures the processing of the application for admission of a new student or of a student returning after an absence from Island Academy of one year or longer.
• All school records for the preceding three years, the name of the school or schools where the child matriculated the preceding three years, and the results of any formal assessments, such as standardized testing results as well as the findings of any psycho-educational assessments that may have been undertaken by the prospective student. The school operates on the basis of transparency and it is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to bring to the school’s attention all pertinent information relating to the child’s prior educational history.
• A birth certificate or passport verifying the child’s date of birth and nationality.

All prospective students are screened for entrance into Island Academy. A mutually convenient date is arranged, and individual or small group screening is conducted. In addition, the school will take into consideration the following when determining whether or not to offer a place at the school:
• The results of an interview with the student’s parents/guardians
• The results of an interview with the prospective student
• The results of the school’s entrance screening assessments, which are designed to indicate the student’s current academic standing in a number of core areas as well as her/his academic potential.

Island Academy reserves the right, at its sole discretion, either to accept or to reject any application for admission. Island Academy does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, socio-economic or political background, religion or ethnicity.

STEP 2

Primary School Screening:
Students entering Kindergarten - Grade 2

Students entering Kindergarten must be 5 years old by December 31st of the year they enter the Kindergarten. The Kindergarten curriculum at Island Academy International School is modeled on that of the "Dwight School" in New York, and includes the "Jolly Phonics" program for language acquisition. Students are then screened individually by the Kindergarten teacher.

Kindergarten and Grade 1 at Island Academy are designed to also parallel the UK national curriculum in Key Stage 1 (5 to 7 year olds).

Students entering Grades 1 and 2 are screened on the following: phonic knowledge, sight vocabulary, standard reading test (if applicable), visual perception, visual memory, and drawing a self-portrait. Grades 1 and 2 are also screened for math skills. Grade 1: number recognition, 1-10; counting and recording to 10, addition and subtraction to 10, oral counting to 10, shapes, and colours. Grade 2: appropriate addition, subtraction, and grouping,

Students entering Grades 3-6
Students entering Grades 3 to 6 are screened on the following: an age-appropriate mathematics assessment, a standardized vocabulary and comprehension assessment, and a sample of writing.

Secondary School Screening:
Students entering Grades 7 - 11
Students are screened on the following: an age-appropriate mathematics assessment, teacher recommendation form from 5 teachers (English, Social Studies, Science, Math and one other teacher), a standardized vocabulary and comprehension assessment, and a sample of writing.

Students entering the IB Diploma
Students entering the IB Diploma Programme are sreened on the following: grades, teacher recommendation form from 5 teachers (English, social studies, science, math, and one other teacher), an age appropriate math assessment, 2 writing samples (one from a course of study in the year preeceding the IB programme and an IA sample) and an interview.

STEP 3

Students who are accepted for admission are entered into the school immediately, if a place is available. An offer of admission must be taken up within 14 days by the payment of $1500 towards the first term's registration fee. This amount is non-refundable. If the student is not coming immediately, the payment of $1500 must be paid in order to keep the place for the student.

A doctor’s report and student health record, together with the first term’s fee, must be received before the child attends school. Admission is dependent on there being no undisclosed conditions that might seriously impair the child’s learning.

If a place is not immediately available, the incoming student’s name will be placed on the waiting list for the year level, and places will be offered to students on the waiting list as they become available.
