DR. RONAN MATTHEW, Headmaster

After completing high school in Antigua, he attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York, and majored in English and Teacher Training. While attending California State University in Hayward, he was hired by the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada, to teach English. He also holds a master's degree in Educational Administration and a doctorate in Educational Leadership, both from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He taught English for eight years at Woodbury Middle School before becoming a school administrator. He has served as a dean, assistant principal and principal. He has served as the Principal of Western High School, Cheyenne High School and Canyon Springs High School and the Leadership and Law Preparatory Academy. After serving for thirty years with the Clark County School District, he retired and returned to Antigua.

JANE JACK, Head of Administration/Bursar

Jane Jack graduated from Seneca College in Toronto, Ontario, in Fashion Design, and in 1993 completed a five-year course in Certified Management Accountants. For several years she was the Financial Controller of a Public Auto Auction in Canada. Besides working at Island Academy, Jane spends much of her free time volunteering on the island, in particular as a certified rescue diver.

DENISE MATTHEW [Student Services/School Secretary]

Jamaican by birth, Denise Matthew has studied Principles of Business and Business Studies and has over 7 years experience in administration. She is an active member of the Antigua and B.A.rbuda HIV and AIDS network (ABHAN), where she does volunteer counseling, educating and assisting persons infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.



Primary School Teachers

 

NATALIE LITTLE [Kindergarten]

B.A., University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Graduate Diploma in Education (Junior Years), Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. For the past few years, Natalie has been actively involved in training, mentorship, development, and volunteer work with a culturally and academically diverse group of students in mainstream and special needs schools. Her aim is to create a positive, stimulating and stable learning environment, and it is her goal to consistently work towards bringing out the inner strengths of all students and help them to build the confidence, knowledge and skills they must need in order to succeed in their future endeavours.

ARNOLYN GOODWIN [Kindergarten]

Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Upper Class Honours). She has been teaching in Antigua for the past twelve years at the Pre-K to Grade 1 levels.

PORTIA MOURSY [Grade 1]

B.A. (Hons) in Politics, University of Leeds, UK; Post-Graduate Certificate of Education from Canterbury Christ Church University, UK; UK government "Fast Track" additional teaching qualification. Portia has 8 years teaching experience in the UK; her last post was as deputy head teacher at one of London's largest schools, situated just a few miles from the 2012 Olympic site.

KATHERINE HUTCHINSON [Grade 2]

Three-Year Early Childhood Education Diploma, Humber College, Ontario, Canada. IBO Administrative Co-Ordinator's Level 1 and PYP Level 1. Applied Behaviour Analysis Trainers (CARD) Certificate.

TANYA MENDOZA [Grade 3]

B.A. in Elementary Education, Florida International University; ESOL Certified. She has fifteen years of experience teaching in the United States and three years in Antigua.

CHRIS NORTON [Grade 4]

B.A. (Hons) in Sociology, University of Leeds, UK; Post-Graduate Certificate of Education, Reading University, UK. Chris taught at CCSET International Academy before joining Island Academy for the 2009/10 academic year. He is a keen sportsman and has represented his home County of Oxfordshire in rugby. For the 2009/10 Soccer season, Chris coached Island Academy High School Boys to a famous victory over the Antiguan Schools Champions.

GIAN CRISCITIELLO [Grade 5]

B.A. in Anthropology, University of New Hampshire: M.S. in Education, Wheelock College. Teacher in primary grades for 13 years in Massachusetts,then primary schoolprincipal for five years in Massachusetts. Participant in National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association's Teacher at Sea Program involved in studying whale populations off the coast of Nova Scotia.

NATALIE LEWIS [Grade 6]

B.A. in International Relations/Development & Intíl Political Economy, Brown University. Besides having taught Gifted Science at the middle Years level, Natalie was Assistant Director, International Education & Multicultural Affairs, at Bryant University in the U.S. and State Coordinator and teacher, Project SEE (Alabama School of Mathematics & Science).

PATRICIA CUNNINGHAM [Primary Art]

B.A. (Hons) in Textiles/Fashion, Manchester Metro University, UK. Post Graduate Certificate in Education: Art and Design, Manchester Metro University, UK. Thirteen years Art & Craft and Design teaching experience in both Secondary and Primary schools in The Bahamas, Montserrat, and Antigua. Classroom support and tutoring in early literacy for students experiencing difficulties. Co-owner of Sea Wolf Diving School, Antigua. Previously part of the team at Bloomsbury to publish Harry Potter.

GILLY HUNTINGTON-RAINEY [Primary Music/Secondary Choir]

Diplome DíAliance FranÁaise, UniversitÈ de Nancy. Five years as Music teacher at Island Academy. Two years prior to that as Island Academy Administrator. Deputy Director of Expression Singers since its inception twenty years ago. Before Gilly came to Antigua in 1984, she worked in the film industry and as a chef on super yachts.

Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Education and is fluent in Spanish

 

 

Secondary School Teachers

 

MICHAEL KIRK [IB English; Theory of Knowledge]

B.A. in Zoology, University of Washington, US; B.Ed., University of North Carolina, US.

Selected as a Master Teacher in Wake Forest Universityís Master Fellows Program. Winner of both the Nancy Wynn Award for Outstanding Student Teacher in North Carolina High School Science, and the Teacher of the Year Award at R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, NC. Teaching experience includes all grade levels except 1-3 and 7, with concentration in secondary sciences (biology and chemistry). Served as interim Headmaster at Island Academy for 1.5 years.

INGRID SOCORRO IB Chemistry and 9-11 Physics Teacher
Ph.D. in Chemistry, University of Cambridge, U.K.; M.Sc. in Chemistry,
Universidad de Granada, Spain and Univesité de Neuchâtel, Switzerland; P.G.C.E. in Chemistry and Physics. She worked as a researcher and as a supervisions/lab teacher at the University of Cambridge before becoming a school teacher. She has experience in IGCSE, A-Level and IB and enjoys working with children and young teens. She has a passion for travelling, languages and outdoor activities

ELIZABETH CARWILE [English, Grades 7 - 11]

B.A. in English from the University of Texas, U.S., M.A. in Humanities from the University of Chicago, U.S. Certified in Special Educationand Secondary English. Seven years of teaching experience in the U.S., Taipei and Taiwan. Teaching experience includes Special Education, ESL and Pre-IB English 1. Received Teacher of the Year in 2006 and the Student Favorite Teacher of the Year in 2007. Served as English Department Chair and IB Diploma Candidate mentor in Houston

LUCIA CLEMENTE [IB Biology; Science, 9 - 11]

B.Scs (Hons.) in Biology, University Of Cape Town, South Africa. Lucia taught for six years in South Africa, then in New Jersey, where she moved into urban education. She then moved back to Africa, where she worked for three years at the Lincoln Community School in Ghana and for two years at the International School of Tanganyika, in Tanzania, teaching IB Biology and MYP Science. In her years teaching she has taught every science from grade 6 up to including grade 12. Her aim is to instil a passion for science, especially biology and the environment, into our youth. She is also a swim coach and loves to be in the water.

JULIETTE ISDEN [Spanish, Grade 8 - IB]]

B.A. (Hons.) in European Languages, Culture and Society, Goldsmiths College, University of London; Post Graduate Certificate in Education, Kings College, University of London; TESOL qualification, Trinity College, London. Juliette has taught for three years in London and four years in Grand Cayman. In her years of teaching she has taught Spanish, French, German, Italian and English as a Foreign Language from grade 1 up to and including grade 13. Juliette has also worked in Adult Education. She is passionate about travel, sports, international cuisine and film.

KAROL LYN EDWARDS [Biology; IB Coordinator]

B.Sc. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland; B.Ed. in Biology, Chemistry, Junior High School Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland; M.Ed. in Teaching Science to Exceptional Students, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. Karol is now in her 22nd year of international school teaching and administration.

CHRISTINE IRVING [Mathematics, Grade 9 - IB]

B.A. (Hons.) in Kinesiology, McMaster University, Canada; B.Ed. (Hons.), Queens University, Canada. Christine has taught mathematics, as well as health and physical education, in the both Ontario and Nevada. She is currently in her third year of teaching at Island Academy.

LATOSHA PARKER [History; Social Studies]

B.A. in History from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; M.Ed. in Secondary Education Social Studies from Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Latosha served two years in the U.S. Peace Corps as a School & Community Resource Volunteer in South Africa, taught secondary United States History (honors), World History (English as a Second Language), and World Religions in U.S. public schools; and English/Literacy in South Korea, Mexico, and South Africa. She has five years of public school education and international development experience.

JOE FEIA [IB Math Studies; Drama]

B.A. in Mathematics, Concordia University, Riverfront, Illinois, US; M.Ed. in Education, Framingham State College, Framingham, Massachusetts, US. Joe taught

for thirty years in various locales including: Hong Kong International School; Colegio Maya, Guatemala; Dhahran School, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; and Osborne High School, Marietta, Georgia, US. His teaching experience includes mathematics from pre-algebra to advanced calculus, as well as directing fifteen plays and musicals and coaching many sports. He received a Presidential Scholar Award in 1998, was named Star Teacher in 2006 and Teacher of the Year in 2008.

CAROL ANN GOULDSTONE [Art]

Diploma in Art and Design, Cardiff Art College, Wales, UK; City and Guilds qualification in Creative Textiles, Windsor and Eton College, U.K. Carol Ann has more than forty years' experience in various fields of the arts, graphic design, fashion design, gallery director, as well as teaching at all levels--primary, secondary and tertiary. Carol has been teaching Visual Arts at Island Academy since 2001.

DORLAN JAMES [Information Technology]

Attended Hatfield Polytechnic, Hertfordshire, and Paddington Technical College, Lutton, U.K. Dorlan spent seven years in England at Brent Information Technology as a Training Supervisor/Director. In Antigua, he worked for six years teaching Information Technology and fourteen years as a computer consultant and technician.

MARK RALPH [Physical Education, Primary and Secondary]

B.Ed. (Hons.) in Physical Education, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Originally from England, Mark moved to Scotland ten years ago to get his degree. Since then he has taught secondary PE in Scotland before moving to Japan. He most recently worked in an international school in Tokyo where he gained knowledge of all three of the International Baccalaureate programs. Mark has always taken a keen interest in extra curricular activities and is a very devoted coach in sports such as Soccer, BasketBall, Volleyball, Softball and many more.
