IA Application Steps

STEP 1

Complete an application Form. (Click here)

Attach the following documents to your application form:

  • Child’s passport biodata page
  • Child’s immunization records. In Antigua and Barbuda, it is a legal requirement for children to be vaccinated against tetanus, pertussis, polio and diphtheria before they start school (Antigua and Barbuda, Chap145, The Education Act). This is also our policy here at Island Academy.
  • Both parent’s or guardian’s passport biography pages (for Antiguan students without proof of passport and international students requiring student permits)
  • A most recent report card (not applicable for Kinder or Grade 1) and transcript
  • $200XCD non-refundable registration fee

Completed application forms with accompanying documents should be sent via email to admissions@islandacademy.com or brought into our office.

STEP 2

Arrange an assessment for prospective student.

All prospective students are screened for entrance into Island Academy. Outside of our Open Day screening, a mutually convenient date is arranged for student to complete an assessment.

Primary School Screening:

Students entering Kindergarten must be 5 years old by March 31st of the academic year they enter Kindergarten. The academic year runs from September to June. Island Academy uses the “Jolly Phonics” program for language acquisition and “Fountas and Pinnell” for literacy. The Kindergarten teacher and assistant screen students individually. Kindergarten (and Grade 1) at Island Academy are also designed to parallel the UK national curriculum in Key Stage 1 (5 to 7 year olds).

Students entering Grades 1 and 2 are screened on the following: phonic knowledge, sight vocabulary, standard reading test (if applicable), visual perception and visual memory. Grades 1 and 2 are also screened for math skills. Grade 1: number recognition, 1-10; counting and recording to 10, addition and subtraction to 10, oral counting to 10, shapes, and colours. Grade 2: appropriate addition, subtraction, and grouping.

Students entering Grades 3 to 6 are screened on the following: an age-appropriate mathematics assessment, a standardized vocabulary and comprehension assessment, and a sample of writing.

Secondary School Screening:

Students entering Grades 7 – 11 are screened on the following: an age/grade-appropriate mathematics and language assessment, a standardized vocabulary comprehension assessment, and writing sample.

Students entering the IBDP are screened on the following: grades from reports/transcript, teacher recommendation, and a Mathematics and English assessment.

Admission is dependent on there being no undisclosed conditions that might seriously impair the child’s learning.

STEP 3

Await school’s decision on admission.

Typically, you should be informed of the school’s decision within a week or two of screening.

The school will take into consideration the following when determining whether or not to offer a place at the school:

  • The results of an interview with the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s).
  • The results of an interview with the prospective student.
  • The results of the school’s entrance screening assessments which are designed to indicate the student’s current academic standing in a number of core areas, as well as his/her academic potential.

Students who are accepted for admission are entered into the school immediately, if a place is available. An offer of admission must be taken up within 14 days. To do this, the payment of $1500.00EC toward the term’s tuition fee is required. This amount is non-refundable. If the student is not coming immediately, the payment of $1500.00EC must still be paid in order to secure the place for the student.

If a place is not immediately available, the incoming student’s name will be placed on the waiting list for the year level. Places will be offered to students on the waiting list only as they become available. We are unable to provide

Please be advised that health records, together with the first term’s fee, MUST be received before the child attends first day of school.

Note: Island Academy reserves the right, at its sole discretion, either to accept or to reject any application for admission. Island Academy does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, socio-economic or political background, religion or ethnicity.

Student Permits

All prospective students who are non-nationals or non-citizens of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (exclusive of those whose parents can demonstrate that they are Antiguan) are required to apply for a student permit. Non-national or non-citizen students who have successfully completed Steps 1 – 3 are considered provisionally accepted pending the attainment of a student permit.

Such students will not be allowed to attend school until they complete the steps required to attend an educational institution in Antigua as set out by the Ministry of Education and Department of Immigration.

Please review our letter to parents of students requiring a student permit or a student permit renewal by clicking here.

It is important to note that the issuance of a student permit is at the discretion of the Department of Immigration. Parents are encouraged to do their research given their individual circumstances well before arriving on island so that they can make sure they fulfil the necessary criteria that will allow their child/children to successfully obtain their student permit by the time they are to start school.
